New Jersey ODP Competes in ENY ODP SubRegional Tournament

New Jersey ODP recently took part in the Eastern New York SubRegional Tournament in Albany, New York. This annual event brought together a range of talented youth athletes, with boys and girls teams from the 2008 to 2013 birth years competing in a weekend filled with high-level soccer. Several ODP State Associations were represented at the event, including Eastern New York, New York West, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and New Jersey.

“We wanted to put together another tournament to prepare for the ID tournament and give our kids and our neighbor’s kids a second chance to be identified. We have been lucky enough to have states like NJ, Mass, CT, NH, NYW and ME to support us,” said Jim Volpe, Eastern New York ODP Director. “We made it as affordable as possible. We just wanted to give the kids one more opportunity. The moral to the story is we can do anything if we all work together. It has been my privilege and pleasure to work with all of you on this event.”

The Eastern New York SubRegional offered valuable match experience, allowing players to showcase their abilities in a competitive environment and further their development in preparation for future ODP events.

“Having competition at the ODP level allows the NJ ODP players to learn and develop individually in a good team setting,” added Auke Wiersma, NJYS ODP Training Director. “To have the opportunity to play with and against players at those excellent levels surely makes the players better. They can bring the experiences back to their clubs, making ODP an invaluable part of their and others’ soccer and life development.”

New Jersey Youth Soccer and New Jersey ODP would like to extend their gratitude to Eastern New York ODP for their hospitality and for organizing such a well-run tournament. We also want to thank the dedicated players, families and coaches who made the trip to Albany and made it such a rewarding weekend.

New Jersey ODP Hosts 2024 NJYS Friendlies

New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP) recently hosted its 2024 NJYS Friendlies Tournament, providing a platform for New Jersey ODP players to compete against Eastern New York ODP teams and top club teams from New Jersey and New York.

The tournament featured multiple games throughout the day, offering competitive matchups for boys’ and girls’ divisions in age groups ranging from 2008 to 2013. Matches were held at premier locations across New Jersey, including Jackson and Oceanport.

“The NJYS Friendlies allowed coaches to observe players in a game setting for the first time this season,” said Homere Breton, NJYS ODP Team Management and Young Olympians Coaching Director. “From the touch, we noted a wonderful display of players becoming acclimated with each other, while they tweaked their individual strengths and weaknesses.”

The NJYS Friendlies aim to prepare NJODP teams for the winter season, where they will participate in high-level tournaments across Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina.

“Our coaches were able to use inclusive language, give constructive feedback and provide encouragement to create a supportive environment,” said Alex Lalaoui, NJYS ODP Coaching Director.

New Jersey Youth Soccer and New Jersey ODP would like to express their gratitude towards Eastern New York Youth Soccer for taking part in these NJYS Friendlies. We also want to thank all the families and players who came out to support this event.

“We now have a very promising foundation from which we can work,” concluded Breton. “The talent is there and those who are willing to commit to the program will have the opportunity to be identified for East Region selection.”

The Olympic Development Program is an identification system linked to the United States Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer. The program offers its players a pathway that could lead to representation of the Regional and U.S. Youth National Teams. New Jersey ODP Kicks Off Its 2024-25 Season

New Jersey ODP recently held its first training session of the 2024-25 campaign, marking the initial live event of the seasonal year. Players from various age groups participated in this session at Friendship Field in Bordentown, New Jersey.

The training started with brisk warmups gearing towards an informative and live action session for players. That was shortly followed by 4v2 rondos, with an objective of the attacking group maintaining possession of the ball under pressure from the defending pair. The drill encourages players to make quick and effective decisions under pressure while communicating clearly to coordinate movements.

After the first stage of the session was complete, players participated in 6v6+6 possession games. That was followed by set-plays defending, where the objective for defending teams is to protect the goal and defend efficiently against various set play situations while maintaining defensive organization and awareness. The drill emphasizes communication, teamwork and concentration.

“It was a pleasure to greet the cream of the crop and to welcome them to our NJODP family,” said Homere Breton, NJYS ODP Team Management and YOP Coaching Director. “It is clear to me that every player is a leader who has accepted the challenge not only to represent New Jersey – one of the greatest soccer states in the country – but to accept the opportunity to increase the level of play at the state, regional and national levels. As I scanned the fields of champions, technical abilities were greatly apparent, highlighting to us that Jersey soccer can viably meet the challenge to be stronger than ever. Now is the time to nurture technical skills and tactical awareness. I look forward to witnessing this growth and remain proud to be among those supporting this goal!”

The training concluded with small and full sided games, where players utilized the skills learned from previous drills to enhance their game in a live action scenario.

New Jersey ODP Shines In EPA Friendlies

In a thrilling showcase of soccer prowess, the New Jersey Olympic Development Program (NJ ODP) made a significant mark in the Eastern Pennsylvania (EPA) ODP Friendlies, bringing together boys and girls from the 2007-2012 age groups. The dynamic event unfolded in the picturesque locales of Downingtown and Palmyra, Pennsylvania, creating an unforgettable experience for players, coaches, and spectators alike.

The girls’ matches were a spectacle of skill and strategy, with NJ ODP players demonstrating exceptional talent on the field. The 2009 girls’ team stole the spotlight with a commanding performance against their counterparts from EPA. Precision passes, agile dribbles and well-executed set pieces showcased the girls’ dedication to honing their craft.

“I saw team collaboration, cooperation and commitments with smiles at the EPA Friendlies from our NJ ODP players, coaches and parents from the sidelines, which gave our teams a significant advantage and opportunities. Those were our secret ingredients behind their amazing performances,” said Alex Laloui, NJYS ODP Youth Coaching Director. “Coaches have created a positive team atmosphere that supports players’ problem solving and team growth.”

The boys’ division was equally exciting, featuring intense battles and impressive displays of athleticism. The NJ ODP Boys faced stiff competition in Downingtown and Palmyra but grew as a team during these friendlies while showcasing their determination and teamwork, earning applause for their resilience on the pitch. The boys’ matches were a testament to the competitive spirit and sportsmanship ingrained in the NJ ODP players.

“It was a pleasure hosting New Jersey ODP this past weekend. It has become a great way for both state associations to learn and grow on the field during the cold winter months,” said Bree Benedict, EPYSA ODP Manager. “With our younger teams playing 6v6, the competitive level was high, and all teams had great opportunities to work on the attacking side of the ball. Our older groups were able to build team cohesion and continue to work on their styles of play.”

Several team performances stood out during the EPA Friendlies. Standout moments occurred when NJ ODP teams orchestrated brilliant passes, leading to spectacular goals that ignited cheers from the crowd. Goalkeepers showcased their agility with crucial saves, and forwards exhibited clinical finishing, adding to the excitement of each match.

Beyond the field, the soccer event fostered a sense of community spirit. Families, friends and soccer enthusiasts gathered to support the NJ ODP teams, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Coaches provided guidance and encouragement, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.

As the final whistle blew on this memorable soccer event, NJ ODP left a lasting impression with their skillful performances and competitive spirit. The experience gained in the EPA Friendlies will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing development of these young athletes. The future looks promising for NJ ODP, as they continue to make waves in youth soccer and inspire the next generation of players.

NJYS ODP would like to express its gratitude to the New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania ODP players, coaches and families who attended this event.

NJYS ODP Friendlies Held in Oceanport and Jackson

In a dazzling showcase of youth soccer talent, Maria Gatta Community Park in Oceanport and the Jackson Justice Complex in Jackson recently played host to the highly anticipated NJYS ODP Friendlies, bringing together athletes from the Boys and Girls 2007-2012 age groups. The event, featuring ODP teams from the New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and Eastern New York Regions, unfolded in a spirited atmosphere with passionate players and enthusiastic supporters adding to the electric ambiance.

The girls’ matches were nothing short of spectacular, with precision passes, skillful dribbles and remarkable teamwork on display. The teams showcased their prowess in both attacking and defensive aspects, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. The commitment and sportsmanship exhibited by the young athletes painted a promising picture for the future of the game.

“The annual NJYS Friendlies featured in Jackson and Oceanport facilitated high-quality match play and experiential learning,” said Lou Mignone, ODP Youth Coaching Director & NJYS TOPSoccer Director. “Players were guided by staff while implementing team tactical principles and individual player actions that are part of our ODP Game Model. Participants showcased talents within this competitive setting and were inspired to continue to take responsibility and accountability for their own performance and development.”

The boys’ division added another layer of excitement to the event, featuring fast-paced action and plentiful team effort. From skillful tactical movements to lightning-quick counterattacks, the boys left no stone unturned in their pursuit of victory.

“I had the pleasure of watching our state players’ performance at the NJYS ODP Friendlies,” said Homere Breton, ODP Junior & Young Olympians Program Director. “On Saturday, while the sun made its greatest effort to break through the thickest of fog, our players remained focused to perform on what turned out to be a perfect forum for ODP games. Although there is no better teacher than the game itself, I was very pleased to see aspects of our practice sessions applied during play. How to get out of the back and keep playing in our opponents’ end was clearly demonstrated and rewarded with goals.”

Coach Breton then spoke about the difficulties that came with inclement weather on the following day of competition.

“Mother Nature provided a different playing field on Sunday, complete with downpours of rain,” he continued. “As we crossed our fingers in hopes of continuous play, the girls also showcased well on many levels in the rain. A tremendous applause to all the girls, parents and guests for the level of commitment to the game. Players were asked to perform in other positions to get a better understanding of approaching the game from various starting points. Such efforts increased their confidence and ability to speak the ineffable language of the game, fluently. I cannot wait to see our players again soon to see how well they progress.”

Beyond the action on the field, Maria Gatta Community Park and the Jackson Justice Complex buzzed with a sense of community and camaraderie. Families and friends gathered around the pitch, cheering for their teams and players. Coaches were seen offering guidance and encouragement, fostering an environment that celebrated not only skill but also the values of sportsmanship and fair play.

As the last whistle blew on a memorable weekend of soccer, players and supporters alike left the two venues with a shared sense of accomplishment, along with the knowledge that they had been part of something special. The NJYS ODP Friendlies proved to be a testament to the passion and talent flourishing in youth soccer, setting the stage for a bright future in the game.

NJYS ODP would like to express its gratitude to New Jersey, Eastern New York and Eastern Pennsylvania players and families who attended the event, as well as Oceanport and Jackson Township for providing exquisite facilities and environment.
