The New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP) recently took part in the Maryland ODP Friendlies, where the 2008-2013 boys and 2008, 2010-2013 girls teams competed at Liberty Sports Park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

The ODP Friendlies bring together youth teams from various states, allowing them to compete against one another. The event included teams from New Jersey, Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania West. This tournament serves as a crucial platform for NJ ODP teams to demonstrate their abilities and compete against neighboring ODP state programs.

“The MD Friendlies play a significant role for NJ ODP,” said James Galanis, NJYS Director of Technical Operations. “It provides an opportunity to emphasize key areas of development, including play in the middle third and sharpening tactical concepts we have been focusing on. It was a highly successful event for our teams and players.”

Maryland ODP hosted the friendlies at Liberty Sports Park, their established home facility.

“The 2025 Maryland ODP Invitational was a success, even with the challenging weather,” said Gandalf French, Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) Technical Director. “It provided an excellent environment for players to compete and for coaches to better prepare for the Spring ODP training cycle. This event is crucial for Maryland and the four other states involved, offering high-level competition, exposure to college coaches and visibility to Regional ID Scouts.”

New Jersey ODP extends its thanks to Maryland ODP and Gandalf French for their dedication in ensuring the event’s success for all participating state associations.

The Olympic Development Program, affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer, identifies potential players for Regional and U.S. Youth National Teams. Established in 1977, ODP is the country’s first program designed to recognize future national team talent. Players progress from the local level to state, regional, and possibly national teams, benefiting from the chance to compete with similarly talented athletes and gain exposure to college scouts.
