U.S. Soccer Grassroots In-Person License Courses

These 4 separate and distinct courses offer to coaches of grassroots players a variety of education entry points based upon ages and corresponding game models specified by the U.S. Soccer Player Development Initiative that include 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11.

Building blocks for learning include the Profile of the Grassroots Coach that outlines the 6 Tasks of a Coach, the Attacking and Defending Roadmaps that serves as an observational tool, the Coach’s Toolkit for managing teaching actions, and the Training Session Manual that guides the Play-Practice-Play Methodology for a holistic approach to creating reality-based, experiential learning opportunities for grassroots players.  Course theoretical and practical content is delivered through a blended format which can include a combination of online, virtual, and in-person learning engagement.    

  • Coaches will learn more about U.S. Soccer's Coaching Education philosophy.
  • Learn about how to develop a player-centered approach to coaching.
  • Classroom and field-based sessions. 
  • Learn Play-Practice-Play Methodology.
  • Learn Six Tasks of a Grassroots Coach among other topics.  

Upcoming Grassroots Courses

In order to register for any US Soccer Grassroots Course, you will need to open a free account with the US Soccer Learning Center. After creating an account, you will need to complete the free 20-minute Introduction to Grassroots Coaching before you can register for these courses.

Course Format

The Grassroots In-Person Courses are four-hour courses that builds on the principles covered in "U.S. Soccer’s Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module".  Courses are typically structured into:

  • Two (2) hours of a virtual classroom instruction
  • Two (2) hours of on-field instruction
Coaches will be asked to participate in discussions so each person should have access to web camera/live video capabilities and may be asked to participate in the field component as either coaches or players, so please come prepared to actively learn!

Eligibility Requirements

To register for a US Soccer Grassroots Course, candidates must:

  1. be at least 16 years old, and
  2. have completed U.S. Soccer’s "Introduction to Grassroots Coaching" module.  

Please be advised that this US Soccer Grassroots Coaching In-person License does not meet the requirements outlined in New Jersey’s Little League Law to coach in NJYS.
