NJYS Young Olympians Completes Spring Training Sessions
Austin Lloyd, NJ Youth Soccer
The NJ Youth Soccer Young Olympians Program has now completed the training portion of its spring season.
Throughout the spring season, players were challenged technically through juggling and dribbling, with a focus on foot skills and first-touch activities. The young athletes were also encouraged to be creative and explore different ways to manipulate the ball. Likewise, the passing activities centered around the players having the proper form, technique and follow-through to develop texture and learn how to adjust the body to receive and pass.
“The sessions can only be as good as the players, and I am delighted to say that the players were phenomenal,” said Homore Breton, NJYS Young Olympians Director. “They were excited and eager to learn, and I cannot wait to see how well they play in 4v4 and 9v9 games. During this Young Olympians season, I got to witness great individual development and growth.”
Creativity and decision making were two points of emphasis this season while players were involved in game-like activities. These opposed tactical activities required decision making, vision and creativity while advancing the ball forward. The question they were asked to solve is “How can the player and/or group keep possession while still moving forward?”
Defensively, players were provided insights on how to prevent an opponent from advancing the ball. All training sessions concluded with a scrimmage where players were encouraged to be creative and to apply the fundamental skills covered during the sessions.
The next phase of Young Olympians involves team play in 4v4 and 9v9 environments during the weekends of June 18-19th and June 25-26th

The
NJYS
Young Olympians Program
is designed specifically for players born in 2011 and 2012 (boys and girls).
The goal of the program is to facilitate a high-level training environment while offering participants an opportunity to compete with other aspiring players from around the state. Additionally, it allows players to become familiar with the New Jersey ODP training curriculum as well as showcase their abilities in front of the ODP coaching staff. Each participant is assessed by the ODP coaches, and the sessions are segmented where players are training with others of similar ability. The focus of Young Olympians is to improve each participant’s technical ability and tactical awareness while exposing the player and their parents to the ODP environment.
