NJYS State Cups Provide Forum for Referee Training and Development

While teams prepared to compete in the finals of the NJ Youth Soccer State Cups, specially selected referees were preparing off the field to meet the unique needs of the championship matchups. That preparation led to shining on-field performances that saw referees advance to the US Youth Soccer regional events and national events this summer.

Prior to the championship weekends of the NJYS State Cups, selected referees from throughout the state came together for a continuing education webinar, hosted by Professional Referee Organization General Manager and NJYS Hall of Famer, Mark Geiger, alongside FIFA Assistant Referee, Logan Brown, to study key topics and advanced officiating methodologies.

“NJ Youth Soccer is grateful to work alongside the NJ State Referee Committee in providing a forum for referee development through our State Cups competitions,” said Ryan Foley, NJYS Manger, Operations. “We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of the New Jersey Referees this summer, and we wish them the best at these prestigious National competitions.”

Additionally, games were evaluated by a Referee Coach or Mentor from the NJ State Referee Committee. This allowed each referee to receive coaching and mentorship from the games, as well an opportunity to showcase their talents for selection to the regional and national events this summer.

New Jersey was proudly represented by 12 referees at the Eastern Presidents Cup and 10 Referees at the Eastern Regional Championships. Based on outstanding on-the-field performances, six New Jersey referees were selected to officiate at the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup in Wichita, Kansas, and three NJ referees were selected for the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Magda Zwierzchowski, the State Youth Referee Administrator for New Jersey, congratulated the referees who represented the state at US Youth Soccer regional and national events this summer.

“The NJSRC is proud that our officials conducted themselves with utmost professionalism at State Cup competitions and Regional events this summer,” said Zwierzchowski. “The referee’s preparation off the field translated into top performances on the field, as evidence in having nine New Jersey officials selected to represent the state at US Youth Soccer national events. We are thrilled to have NJYS alongside us to ensure further development and success of our referee program.”
