4v4 League America Festivals Held in Piscataway
Meredith Waropay, NJ Youth Soccer
New Jersey Youth Soccer recently hosted two 4v4 League America Festivals
at Piscataway High School Stadium that were led by Chuck Myers, co-Travel VP of Piscataway Soccer Club. Myers has also been a Board Member for both Mid-New Jersey Youth Soccer Association (MNJYSA) and NJ Youth Soccer, and he was awarded the NJYS Recreation Coach of the Year Award in 2017.
“Young players need the opportunity to explore the game, to figure out dribbling and basic passing, and what works best in a team environment,” said Myers. “Festivals are the perfect place for this soccer exploration to happen.”
The 4v4 League America Festivals provide youth players with a stress-free environment while helping them learn new skills. The program focuses on the overall enjoyment of the game rather than competition by rotating pools of players instead of having distinct teams. At the same time, the 4v4 format allows players to maximize their engagement since they are in close contact with the ball, leading to improved game intelligence.
These events in Piscataway were used as a prototype as MNJYSA, in partnership with NJ Youth Soccer, is considering to offer a set of 4v4 Festivals this fall. This new program would especially benefit 7U-8U players as they transition to full 7v7 play.
NJ Youth Soccer would like to thank the players and families who participated in these 4v4 events. Additionally, the state association would like to thank MNJYSA and Piscataway Soccer Club for supporting this initiative.
