WAGS C Course Profile - Coach Terri Shetler

Coach Terri Shetler is participating in our National C License Course sponsored by Women and Girls in Soccer (WAGS). We want to share her soccer story, which ultimately led her to our course. We are so thrilled to partner with WAGS to elevate women in the game!

ABOUT COACH TERRI SHETLER

Coach Terri Shetler played travel soccer for Rockaway Township growing up. There was no high school girls’ team when she entered Morris Hills High School, but she was still able to secure a place on the women's team at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU).

As an adult, Coach Terri has played on women’s and co-ed teams for NJ Play Sports and in the MCSSA soccer league. In the past, she has coached ages and levels from recreation Pre-K up to working as an assistant coach for the County College of Morris Women's Soccer Program. She is currently the head coach of Hub Soccer of Denville’s 2011 Boys EDP team, 2011 Boys MCYSA team and 2013 Girls MCYSA team.

Coach Terri holds a USSF D License and is currently enrolled in the Women's Blended National C License course, sponsored by Women and Girls in Soccer (WAGS) And New Jersey Youth Soccer. When she is not coaching or playing, you will find her working her other job as a real estate agent, spending time with her kids, traveling and playing golf.

IN HER WORDS - WHAT THIS COURSE MEANS TO ME

I was not going to go beyond the D License. It was enough for me to do what I wanted to do with coaching. I was able to coach at the college level with it, so I saw no reason to pursue a higher-level license.

However, when I heard that WAGS was co-sponsoring an all-female class with NJYS – an ALL-FEMALE class – I jumped at the opportunity. When I took the National E License Course, I was one of three women. In my D License, I was one of two. In both, all the instructors were men. They were incredible courses, but as I looked to my male peers and the relationships they were building with each other, and the camaraderie and understanding they had because of shared experiences, I felt left out and frankly a little envious. Don’t get me wrong; they were great guys and great coaches and were all incredibly respectful and supportive, but I’m never going to be “one of the guys” because, well, I’m not a guy… And when I would talk about some of the issues I face as a female coach, especially of boys’ teams, they just didn’t get it.

This course so far has been AMAZING! The relationships I’ve built already, even over virtual meetings, have been incredible. I am so grateful for this course because I would not have pursued my C license otherwise and I have already learned so much – about leadership, about coaching, about myself, even about soccer which I thought I knew pretty well before – and also found a group of women who get me, who get my experiences, who have experienced similar things, who I can see myself maintaining friendships with for a long time after this course in a way that just didn’t work out when it was mostly men.

Thank you SO MUCH for putting this together for us.
