NJYS Wraps Up Pilot of After School Student Soccer Club

Students from West Morris Central High School recently completed the pilot of New Jersey Youth Soccer’s After School Student Soccer Club. The program, consisting of four segments, allocated NJYS resources to establish an extracurricular soccer club in the school system that creates development opportunities for players while promoting fun, safe and accessible soccer.

The four segments included:

  • Career Development via educational webinars from sports professionals.
  •  Social Engagement via Esports competition.
  •  Physical Development via friendly 4v4 soccer competition.
  •  Community Engagement via volunteer opportunities.

To execute the program, NJ Youth Soccer identified Student Ambassadors from West Morris Central High School, who collaborated with the State Association throughout the school year to help build the foundation.

I am extremely proud of this dedicated and passionate team, and everything that we have accomplished to launch this pilot and make it a reality,” said Alex Hoberman, a senior at West Morris Central High School and the founder of the NJYS After School Student Soccer Club.

Under the guidance of NJYS staff, Hoberman helped to implement this program along with fellow Student Ambassadors from West Morris Central High School, Eric Lusskin and Zack Dragos. Seeing the potential growth for this program, NJ Youth Soccer recently confirmed future funding to expand this program courtesy of the US Soccer Innovate to Grow Initiative.

"This is an exciting initiative for both the Student Ambassadors and the students,” said Evan Dabby, NJYS Executive Director. “We are honored to receive a US Soccer grant to extend our reach to even more New Jersey high schools in the coming year.”

"When I first heard about this program from Alex, I knew that I wanted to be involved,” said Eric Lusskin, Student Ambassador. "I believe this program provides a pathway for me to give back for all of the opportunities that I have been given, and to help shape the future of youth soccer for both students and athletes."

“I have been playing soccer for as long as I can remember,” added Zack Dragos, Student Ambassador. “It is our goal through this program, however, to open the world of soccer to anyone in our local schools and communities - even if they have not played a day of soccer in their lives – and use our shared love for the sport to foster new opportunities for players."

Collaborating with NJ Youth Soccer, Hoberman envisions an expansion of this program to districts across New Jersey, especially in underserved communities where the opportunity to support student-athletes is most prominent.

“I am super excited for the future,” he concluded. “With this program’s thoughtful design and this amazing team, the future is promising.”
