New Jersey Youth Soccer is proud to recognize New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP) participant Angelina Amaya on her selection to the U17 El Salvador National Team.

“It means a lot (to get selected) because it gives me great honor to represent my country where soccer is everything,” said Amaya. “El Salvador is a very small country but with a big heart, and I always wanted to play on their team and represent them with great honor.”

Amaya was born into a Salvadoran family that loves soccer. Following in her father’s footsteps, she began playing the game when she was five years old. Since her first introduction to soccer, Amaya has not wavered in her desire to make it to the highest level. She has continued to work hard on the development of her skills in order to progress towards her goals.

Amaya has been participating in New Jersey ODP for four years and has grown tremendously as a player with the help of her coaches. She has also been inspired by ODP success stories of former players in the program such as Tobin Heath. A statement by Heath that has always resonated with Amaya is that ‘the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.’

Amaya has been training with the national team in El Salvador to prepare for U17 FIFA World Cup pre-qualifiers that take place from April 22nd to May 9th. The team hopes to qualify for the U17 FIFA World Cup that will take place later this year in India.

“I am excited to be part of the team,” continued Amaya. “I am so happy I will get the opportunity not only to represent them but also with faith make it to the World Cup. What I look forward to the most is getting to know my team, coach and their style of play, and making them proud of having me. I am hoping to be their captain, too!”

When asked to offer advice to younger players on what it takes to reach their goals, Amaya stated, “Simple. Never stop dreaming. Dreams do come true, but only if you believe in yourself!”

New Jersey ODP is an identification system linked to the United States Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer. The program offers its players a pathway that could lead to representing Regional and U.S. Youth National Teams. New Jersey ODP also remains committed to providing its players with top-level coaches and educators.
