NJYS Spotlight: Referees at NJYS State Cups Finals

Austin Lloyd, NJ Youth Soccer

While much of the focus was on the teams competing for a spot in the final rounds of the NJ Youth Soccer State Cups competition, referees from across the state were also working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure they were prepared for the big games.

Led by NJ State Youth Referee Administrator (SYRA), Magda Zwierzchowski, the NJ State Referee Committee (NJSRC) trained and educated 47 game officials to guarantee their readiness for the semifinals and finals of the NJYS Fall State Cups (11U-14U).

The team of 47 referees offered a diverse mix of veterans, ranging from officials of previous State Cups matches to referees making their State Cups debut. The training consisted of two key elements. The first was a webinar that helped convey the importance surrounding the NJYS State Cups, the expectations for the officials and the strategies for bench control. The second item was an educational session that placed an emphasis on teamwork within the referee crew.

To help further develop the participating referees, referee mentors were present during games to observe and critique the crew. After the conclusion of matches, mentors had the opportunity to speak with their team of referees. The experienced mentors were able to clarify complicated situations throughout the match, offer advice and give their input on calls made, and not made, by each crew member.

“The NJSRC is extremely proud of our officials' performances at NJYS State Cups competitions this fall,” said Zwierzchowski. “We have seen progression and steady growth from returning officials and have also witnessed great promise in those officiating this event for the very first time. The future is bright, and we are thrilled to have NJYS alongside us to ensure further development and success of our referee program.”

NJ Youth Soccer would like to acknowledge, congratulate and thank the NJ State Referee Committee, all the referee mentors, and of course the game officials for their hard work and dedication. The NJYS State Cups would not have been as big of a success without the training and preparation from Zwierzchowski and her team.
