NJ Youth Soccer Hosts ODP Intra-Squad Friendlies

Written by Austin Lloyd

The New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP) recently conducted its annual Intra-Squad Friendlies event. Players throughout the state came together to participate in high level soccer games, which were arranged in a round robin format that was designed to give state team players an opportunity to display their skills in front of their coaches while preparing for upcoming tournaments.

"The NJ ODP Intra-Squad Friendlies were an opportunity for our players to compete in full-sided games and to give our coaches the opportunity to analyze their teams further," said James Galanis, NJYS Director of Technical Operations.

ODP Players, with backgrounds from more than 100 NJYS member clubs, had the opportunity to build on-field chemistry with their ODP teammates and begin to form the unique bond of playing in New Jersey ODP.

"From a technical and tactical angle, we were pleased with the level of players we selected through the try-out process," said Galanis. "Considering it was the first time our teams played full-sided games, we were impressed with level of play. There is a real sense of excitement from the coaching staff after the event. It is going to be great year for NJ ODP."

The friendlies took place at Monroe Township Turf Field (2005-2006 boys and girls), Westampton Sports Complex (2007-2008 boys and girls) and Memorial Park in Marlton (2009-2010 boys and girls). Officials from each location worked closely with the New Jersey ODP staff to provide a safe environment for the players and coaches.

The program will now move into team training sessions to prepare for upcoming friendlies with Eastern Pennsylvania ODP in December. Thereafter, the winter phase of the program will commence, where players will take part in a Mental Toughness and Tactical Awareness Webinar before again participating in competitions hosted by other state associations.

NJ Youth Soccer is a National State Association body under US Soccer, with US Youth Soccer serving as the guiding leadership of ODP. Established in 1977, ODP was the first program in the country that was created to identify potential youth national team players. ODP players begin initially at the local sector before progressing to the state, regional and possibly national levels. By playing with like-talented athletes, ODP enables players to advance more rapidly in their personal development. Additionally, ODP players receive more opportunities to be scouted by college coaches.
