Opening Round Recap: NJYS 11U-14U State Cups

The opening round of the New Jersey Youth Soccer 11U-14U State Cups concluded this past weekend, with 534 member teams competing in the National Championship Series, Presidents Cup and Challenge Cup.

The completion of games thus far finalizes team placements in the “Sweet 16.” State Cups action will continue next week to determine the quarterfinalists in each tournament by October 3rd.

Let’s take a look at the action from the opening round…

CHALLENGE CUP

11U Girls

The Peninsula Warrior Eagles faced Mantua Pride in an exciting match that was ultimately decided by kicks from the penalty mark. An own goal put the Mantua side up first before Peninsula’s Emerson Gripp netted a free kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the first half. Regulation ended in a 2-2 draw, with another set of call-and-repeat goals in the second half. Overtime was not enough to decide the fate of the two sides, taking this match into a penalty shootout. Madeline Curran’s back-of-the-net shot sealed the victory for Peninsula, who move on to the “Sweet 16.”

13U Boys

Hanover Strikers defeated Madison in a hard-fought match, 4-0. After a scoreless first half, Hanover came out blazing with goals from William Lee, Evan Ruggero, Gabriel Saliani and Niko Latoky, putting the game out of reach. Goalkeeper Conrad Geraghty and the Strikers defenders held down the back line to fend off a relentless Madison team and secure the win.

"The Strikers are in their fifth year together. While we have had some changes to the roster, the boys continue to grow as a team to improve their game while still learning the game,” noted the head coach of Hanover Strikers. “This is our first time in the Challenge Cup, and we are very excited to compete.”

PRESIDENTS CUP

13U Boys

The Freehold Fire advanced to the next round of their bracket, narrowly beating a strong and organized Swedesboro team, 1-0. Humberto Hernandez highlighted the lone goal of the game after finishing a half field run while holding off two defenders. The Fire defense, led by goalkeeper Guiseppe Romano and starting defenders Jake Schultzel, James Main, Ade Franklyn-Ayeni and Anthony Ayoud, held strong to secure the victory.

14U Boys

Twin County SA Inferno defeated Manalapan SC Vipers by a score of 2-0 to advance to the next round of the tournament. Peyton Auermuller scored on a corner kick to give his team the lead, while a cross from Matt Rodas to Aiden Mussel sealed the victory. The goal scored by Mussel held special meaning, as the game was played on the birthday of his mother, Margaret Mussel, who lost her battle with brain cancer in 2019.

"Our boys played a great game, delivering on concepts that we've been working to improve upon,” said Paul Pallante, head coach of the Twin County SA side. “To say we are happy with the team’s performance would be an understatement."

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

11U Boys

The Round of 32 matchup between Ironbound SC Force and Match Fit Montclair United was a tale of two halves. After back and forth play resulted in a scoreless first half, Ironbound SC made a few major improvements to seal the victory. Goals from Alexandre GouveiaLuka Lima and Noah DosSantos helped the Force build a comfortable lead and earn the eventual win.

12U Girls

The Howell United Flames defeated STA in a narrow 3-2 score line to open the competition. Sarah Viggiano scored on a free kick, and Megan Viggiano added two goals with assists by Aylen Peters and Kate Snowden.

"Our team showed great heart in battling back from an early one goal deficit to earn the win and advance to the next round,” recalled Tim Snowden, head coach of the Howell United Flames.
