New Jersey Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program (NJYS ODP) recently held a Summer Skills Camp for current ODP players. Over 150 NJYS ODP players attended the sessions that were focused on skill development.

The Summer Skills Clinic was a two-day exclusive event hosted at Shetik Field in Secaucus and Jackson Mills Fields in Jackson. The program curriculum was designed by James Galanis, ODP Technical Director, and conducted by Lou Mignone, ODP Coaching Director, in addition to the A-license coaching staff. The clinic focused on improving the technical skills of attendees through a training environment that places an emphasis on technical development.

“This is the second skills camp that we have conducted and, once again, it was a huge success,” said James Galanis, NJYS Director of Technical Operations. “The feedback has been very positive. When we launched the skills camp, our goal was to provide a quality camp with quality coaches to all our players.  We are happy with the quality of the camps.”

The goal of the clinic was to provide players with an opportunity to improve their ball skills and tactical knowledge. Players in the summer clinic focused each day on skill refinements through a variety of activities, including juggling, 1v1 dribbling, passing and shooting, before participating in small-sided tactical games. In addition to the field-player skill development, goalkeeper training was also provided.

“The players got in valuable touches and learned the principles of attacking and defending through tactical games,” said Lou Mignone, NJYS ODP Coaching Director. “The addition of goalkeeper training at the camp gave us the opportunity to tweak the curriculum and add activities that ended with shooting at goal. It was an amazing week of soccer for everyone involved.”
