New Jersey ODP Completes a Successful 2020/21 Season

The New Jersey Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) has successfully completed its 2020/21 season. Despite the changing restrictions, protocol and guidelines presented by the pandemic, New Jersey ODP was still able meet its goals of identifying top talent, executing its curriculum and providing a player-centered environment by adapting and innovating to deliver a valuable program.

“We had to be creative and find ways to continue to identify the players in the Olympic Development Program," said Lou Mignone, ODP Director of Coaching. "We were working with everchanging restrictions and had to monitor the COVID situation and place the safety of our players and staff first. At the end, we are happy that we hosted a program that turned out to be very successful."

As evident by constant contact with other state associations, New Jersey ODP was able to expand offerings to its players due to an ability to anticipate impending issues. To provide programming during the pandemic, New Jersey ODP gave its players the unique opportunity to enjoy webinars for Tactical Awareness, Mental Toughness and ODP Success Stories.

When the state lifted COVID restrictions last summer, New Jersey ODP was able to resume outdoor sporting events with a modified, but very effective, version of the ODP program. New Jersey ODP completed each scheduled training session, two Intra-State Tournaments, a Memorial Day Tournament and the US Youth Soccer (USYS) East Region Tournament.

“We are thankful that the state officials of New Jersey gave youth soccer the green light to resume play, and this allowed us to add tournaments that gave our coaches the opportunity to really get to know their players and identify those who could be recommended to the US Youth Soccer (USYS) East Region,” said James Galanis, NJYS Director of Technical Operations.

New Jersey ODP would like to thank all of the players in its program and will be forever grateful for the effort and sacrifice they made to ensure this year’s program was a success. The New Jersey ODP staff coaches finalized end-of-the-year evaluations and provided a list of top performers to the USYS East Region staff for regional consideration. In addition, the staff is actively redesigning the New Jersey ODP logo and plans to add additional training sessions and supplemental tournaments to ensure an even better program for next year.
