The Suburban Youth Soccer League of New Jersey (SYSL) recently held its annual SYSL Cup, which is a tournament created with the youth soccer player in mind. Hosted by Sayreville Athletic Association Soccer, the event was held at the Sayreville Sports Complex and featured more than 1,000 kids from 64 teams who competed in a total of 92 games throughout the day.

“Due to the competition, atmosphere and camaraderie, our girls look forward to the Andrew Bondarowicz SYSL Cup at the end of every season, and this year was no different,” explained Coach Anand of the Scotch Plains Fanwood Tidal Waves. “That’s truly what makes the SYSL tournament so special, which is great soccer but also a great community. We can’t wait for next year!”

Designed by the SYSL Board members, the SYSL Cup embodies everything that the organization believes in as it provides an incredible environment for all who participate and truly tries to deliver the best experience possible for its recreation players. In addition, the focus on the youth is not only applicable to the players but also the referees, as young, up-and-coming officials are paired with more experienced individuals throughout the event to enhance their own skills.

“I’ve been a part of SYSL as a coach and town representative for Bound Brook for about four years now, and every year the tournament gets progressively better,” said Maria Rivero from Bound Brook Recreational Soccer. “I think it is great that these U9-U11 players are able to participate in tournament-style play that you normally would not get with playing recreationally.”

Through the support of vendors and sponsors, like Hummel, SYSL was able to provide a first-class experience to all who attended, as the organization believes that this event will lead to a love for the sport at a young age. To follow through on that vision, the SYSL organizers created “Tent City,” which served as a kick around area in-between games and a central location for vendors. SYSL also hired a photographer for the day to capture action shots, in addition to including a photo opportunity for each team with the Andrew Bondarowicz Trophy and their respective medals.

“Throughout the entire day, from the first games in the morning through the final championship game after 5 PM, there was an avalanche of smiles,” stated Bob McGuinness, SYSL Deputy Commissioner. “To see these young boys and girls playing the game they love and spending their down-time between games with their families and teammates was wonderful.”

SYSL NJ was founded in 2017 to provide a soccer environment for member clubs and organizations and their constituents to develop, promote and serve the New Jersey soccer interests of their youth members through amateur competition and educational programs.
