NJYS Teams Up with Chatham United Soccer for TOPSoccer Virtual Event

New Jersey Youth Soccer recently held a TOPSoccer Virtual Fun Session that was sponsored by RWJBarnabas Health. The virtual session was hosted by Chatham United Soccer, and the event was open to all players with special needs.

Moderated by NJYS Director of TOPSoccer Coach Lou Mignone and Coach Jonathan Yee of Chatham United Soccer, the session began with some simple stretching before the activities began. After the warm-up, Coach Jon led a game of Simon Says, which was followed by soccer juggling with balloons. The group enjoyed the balloon juggling challenges, which progressed to shooting against Coach Lou as a virtual goalkeeper. Once the skills session was complete, Coach Jon taught arts and crafts as the athletes learned how to draw a soccer ball.

“TOPSoccer has been such an amazing experience. I have a ton of fun with the program, making new friends, learning about coaching players with special needs, and I’ve also learned a bit about myself,” said Coach Jon. “Seeing the smiles on our players’ faces at the end of each session is absolute magic. Overall, TOPSoccer has served as a wonderful reminder of the great things we can accomplish by working together.”

As the session began to wind down, participants were treated to versions of popular radio songs that were performed by Sarah Thomson, a talented Chatham United Soccer volunteer. The afternoon then concluded with the traditional clap-out and goodbyes. Before leaving, everyone wished Rishi a happy birthday, and the group had the opportunity to listen to Caleb’s piano rendition of “Ode to Joy.”

TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement initiative for young athletes with special needs. The program also provides a curriculum to train coaches in how to provide fun and engaging soccer for those young athletes. The program, designed by U.S. Youth Soccer, emphasizes player-specific development, training and meaningful participation rather than competition and results.

“These events are organized to provide low barrier, easy access opportunities for children with special needs to engage within fun virtual soccer activities that incorporate a variety of movement and coordination exercises, inspire creativity, and facilitate meaningful interaction,” explained Coach Lou. “We encourage clubs throughout our membership to start TOPSoccer and welcome many children to the beautiful game who would otherwise not have a place to play.”

Over the next few weeks, NJ Youth Soccer will be hosting additional TOPSoccer Virutal Fun Sessions, so please visit the program online for more information about the upcoming events.
