NJYS Hosts First 4v4 Club Foundation Program Events of Spring Season

New Jersey Youth Soccer recently held its first 4v4 Club Foundation Program events of the spring season for 7U-8U boys and girls. The NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation Program was created for players and coaches to benefit from a fun hour of open play and friendly competition.

Hosted at the Capelli Sports Complex in Tinton Falls, the 4v4 Shore Program featured players from Jackson, Marlboro, Middlesex, Millstone and World Elite Soccer Clubs. They participated in 10-minute games before rotating so everyone had an opportunity to compete against one another.  The event was run by NJYS Coaching staff members Rick Meana, Dennis Peregrim, Ben Chernelich, Stephanie Peters and Jim Harrison.

“At Jackson Soccer Club, we love to supplement 4v4 events into our training program as our players get to work on their creativity with the ball in a low-pressure environment that really does help to build their confidence,” said Ryan Brown, Head Coach of Jackson Blast. “However, it is important to know that it is not just for the kids, but the questions we receive from the NJYS staff also helps to make us better as coaches.”

The NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation Program is a series of sessions using the smallest version of the game in a space that allows young children to more easily understand and learn the game of soccer. The 4v4 game format makes learning and developing fun because players are constantly in close contact with the ball, which maximizes participation and engagement while accelerating skill acquisition and game intelligence of all players involved.

By using a pool of players rather than distinct teams, clubs can develop their “in-house” program by having everyone train and play through the NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation setup. This approach allows participants to train and play with a variety of other players based on numbers, ability, age, height, weight, etc. Formal games, referees and rosters are not needed at this age, so playing with and against teammates provides a flexible and fluid approach.

“The weather on Friday night did not dampen the opportunity for the players to get what they wanted from playing; fun with no influence from coaches or referees,” said Rick Meana, NJYS Director of Coaching. “No world class player started with a coach in an organized soccer setting, but instead, they played and learned the game in the street. Our 4v4 Club Foundation Program is as close as you can get to a street environment, albeit supervised for safety.”

In addition to the Shore Program, there was an additional session conducted at Rikers Elementary School that brought out players from the Morris County Soccer Association (MCYSA) and Livingston Soccer Club.

Notes about the 4v4 Club Foundation Program:

  • Results and standings are not recorded, and this event limits travel time for participants.
  • Providing fun, encouragement and safe soccer learning environments are our top priorities during these events.
  • Registration is still currently open, and there are many spots available in some locations for sessions during the 2021 Spring season. The cost is $30 per team, per session. Click here to secure your club’s spot!
