Group Play Begins in NJ Youth Soccer Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup has officially kicked off in association with NJ Youth Soccer State Cups. Teams competed in a structured group play format taking place across all of New Jersey.

Teams from the 11U-18/19U age groups have begun competing in the NJ Youth Soccer Presidents Cup, as they pursue a berth to single elimination quarterfinal and/or semifinal rounds. Most teams in the Presidents Cup compete in a three-game group play format that will see the first-place finishers advance to the single elimination rounds. The first major weekend of group play will see nearly 400 teams begin their hunt for a State Champion title.

With just two or three games to decide the group winners, the teams wasted little time in bringing the intensity to the field. All sides know they need to make each result count in their pursuits of a State Champion Title. These meaningful games provide players with a chance to challenge themselves in a competitive environment.

A look back at recent action in the NJYS Presidents Cup…

17U GIRLS

NJ Elite 04 “Morgan” took on CAPS AC Milan on a very windy Friday evening. The game finished 4-1 in NJ Elite’s favor, but it took perseverance for NJ Elite to get the upper hand against a very strong CAPS team. The best goal out of the lot was a screamer of a free kick from Emma Couchie.

"It was a really tough game, and the weather and strong winds really did not help things," said Mark Lowdon, head coach of NJ Elite 04 Morgan.

The victory puts NJ Elite at the top of their bracket with two games remaining in the group play round.

12U BOYS

The Boys 12U Freehold Fire took home a 3-0 victory in their first ever Presidents Cup match. The scoring was led by Nate Calder, who recorded a brace, and Zack Dabby, who added a goal. Despite strong attacking play by a quality PSA Wildcats team, goalkeeper Guiseppe Romano kept a clean sheet.

“My team did a good job with passing,” said Romano. “One big highlight was when PSA shot the ball at the top of the box. It came to the top of the net, and I punched it over to prevent the goal. Together, as a team, we pulled out a 3-0 win.”

15U BOYS

The fog came rolling in, but that did not stop the Clifton Stallions Turf Boys (U15) from winning against Steel United, 4-1. Steel United will look to get into the winners’ column in their next match against Howell United Soccer Club’s Titans Green.

16U BOYS

The 16U boys bracket got off to an exciting start as the Elizabeth Dragons defeated the Edison United Cosmos by a score of 2-1. Playing in the rain, the Dragons stormed back in the final five minutes to tie the game, and they ultimately scored the deciding goal before time expired. The goals for the Dragons were scored by Aidan Guillem and Brandon Pires, while the Edison United goalkeeper had a great game, saving two penalty kicks and making many tremendous saves throughout the match.

The Presidents Cup provides additional challenges to play against teams of similar abilities for a national title. The cup provides a progressive, competitive experience to teams that might not otherwise get the opportunity to participate in a series of unique experiences highlighting competition, camaraderie and community from the state to regional to national levels of US Youth Soccer.
