New Jersey ODP Hosts First Friendlies Tournament of 2021

The New Jersey Olympic Development Program recently hosted its first ODP Friendlies Tournament of 2021 at the Jackson Justice Complex, allowing ODP players another opportunity to train as well as offer coaches the chance to continue evaluating the state’s top players.

“After a long, hard winter, soccer is a bright spot we are all looking forward to in our return to normalcy,” explained Coach Rico Scardeletti of the ’04 Boys White team. “The ODP Friendlies provided a chance to play at a high level and experience a competitive environment, while having fun doing so.”

The New Jersey ODP Friendlies were designed to recreate the competitive ODP environment, despite the regional restrictions brought on by COVID. From each age group, players throughout the state came together to compete in a round robin tournament that was designed to offer them improvement on the field ahead of their spring season. Equally as important, it gave the coaching staff more time to analyze their squads.

“The competition between teams elevates the level of players and staff,” said Auke Wiersma, ODP Senior Team Director.

With initial ODP selection leading to representation of New Jersey in regional competition against other state teams, further identification and evaluation is made of players to provide Regional Team opportunities. While ODP is important to the personal development of players, it is just as vital for the coaching staff to identify potential youth national team contributors and further the growth of U.S. Soccer as a whole.

“Our recent ODP Friendlies provided players and coaches with another great opportunity to be tested in a competitive environment, which is what the Olympic Development Program is all about,” stated Coach Ruben Vloedgraven of the ’07 Girls Red team. “The fact that we were finally able to get out after a month of snow made it even better!”

NJ Youth Soccer is a National State Association body under U.S. Soccer, with US Youth Soccer serving as the guiding leadership of ODP. Established in 1977, ODP was the first program in the country that was created to identify potential youth national team players. ODP players begin initially at the local sector before progressing to the state, regional and possibly national levels. By playing with like-talented athletes, ODP enables players to advance more rapidly in their personal development. Additionally, ODP players receive more opportunities to be scouted by college coaches.
