NJ Youth Soccer Teams Up with West Morris SC for TOPSoccer Virtual Jamboree

Feature written by Richard Leister, NJYS Contributor

Despite the limitations imposed by COVID, the imagination of West Morris SC TOPSoccer has experienced no such restraints. Recognizing that experience, New Jersey Youth Soccer and West Morris Soccer Club teamed up to conduct a virtual TOPSoccer Jamboree sponsored by RWJBarnabas Health, creating a truly memorable experience for players and buddies.

TOPSoccer is a community based training and team placement program for young players with special needs. Bringing the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl with special needs, TOPSoccer provides assistance to affiliated organizations with ways to enable players with mental or physical disabilities to play soccer. The emphasis of this program is on development, training and meaningful participation rather than on competition.

Rick Meana, NJYS Director of Coaching, hosted the meeting and welcomed Carli Lloyd, NJYS Ambassador and two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, into the conversation to offer invaluable advice to the players regarding her experience with adversity, as well as the importance of soccer and New Jersey to her personally.

After a Q&A with Lloyd, Meana introduced and congratulated Doon Wintz and all of the West Morris SC volunteers for their efforts. Wintz then orchestrated the festivities beginning with stretching led by Patrick, which was followed by a break-out room drawing activity. Once the break-out room was completed, the players were treated to a challenging game of “Simon Says” and a Taylor Swift-inspired freeze dance session. Following a water break, Amy led a yoga session before the players got to practice their soccer skills with Liam. Finally, the exercises were completed after the players shot a ball on net using the “magic cam.”

At the end of their clap-out, the players were treated to more entertainment in the form of an extremely fun, high-energy performance from the New York Red Bulls Freestyle Team. Juan, David and Emiliano provided individual freestyle performances, and the players voted David as the champion. After the show put on by the Red Bulls Freestyle Team, the last activity of the session was a training video guided by Lou Mignone, NJYS ODP Director of Coaching, about ways to stay active and exercise.

The afternoon concluded with a thank you from Carol Cordiner, NJYS TOPSoccer Director, to all players and volunteers for their coordination in this year’s event. To find out more about the NJYS TOPSoccer program, click HERE.
