NJYS, MCYSA and Livingston SC Host 4v4 Festival

East Windsor, N.J. (Nov. 18, 2020) – New Jersey Youth Soccer (NJYS) recently partnered with Morris County Youth Soccer Association (MCYSA) and Livingston Soccer Club to host a North Jersey 4v4 Festival. The event was held as part of the NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation Program, which was created for players and coaches to benefit from a fun hour of open play and friendly competition.

The festival was run by NJYS Coaching Schools staff members Rick Meana and Lou Mignone, MCYSA President Kyle Haddock and Livingston SC Travel Director Steve Brooks. It was hosted in Livingston at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Community Turf Field.

"Coach Rick, Coach Lou, MCYSA and all of NJ Youth Soccer have been incredibly supportive in this endeavor to allow for our youngest players to play soccer,” said Steve Brooks of Livingston Soccer Club and NJYS Member at Large. “The 4v4 festivals have introduced a brand-new style of soccer to our parents that has won them over from the very first festival. The feedback has been positive, and we have been able to run a safe, fun and developmental program that we see growing in this town for years to come."

NJYS and
MCYSA coordinated a multi-week program as a pilot to illustrate to clubs in Northern New Jersey how such a program can be implemented and brought to scale.

The NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation Program is designed as a series of sessions that use the smallest version of the game. The program contains all the elements of a real full-sided match but in a space that young children can more easily understand and learn the game of soccer. The 4v4 format makes learning and developing more fun because players are constantly in close contact with the ball, maximizing participation and engagement while also accelerating their skill acquisition and game intelligence.

“It has been a great experience seeing the concepts of U.S. Soccer’s Grassroots Coaching Philosophy come to life,” said Kyle Haddock, President of MCYSA. “Through 4v4 we have been able to illustrate, in a practical environment, a new culture for 7U, 8U and 9U player development. We took the time to work with coaches to foster a supportive and player centric environment from the outset and provided weekly reminders and tips on maintaining consistent coaching philosophies. The 4v4 program is transforming how clubs build their community soccer program. We look forward to facilitating expansion to additional locations in North New Jersey in the Spring 2021.”

By using a pool of players rather than distinct teams, clubs can develop their “in-house” program by having everyone train and play through the NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation setup. This approach allows participants to train and play with a variety of other players based on numbers, ability, age, height, weight, etc. Formal games, referees and rosters are not needed at this age, so playing with and against teammates provides a flexible and fluid approach.

  • Results and standings are not recorded, and this event limits travel time for participants.
  • Providing fun, encouragement and safe soccer learning environments are our top priorities during these events.
  • Events are coordinated regionally, providing on-site technical support in each session, and they are structured in a scalable format.

Registration is currently open for the Spring 2021 season. The cost is $50 per team, which guarantees six slots throughout the season. Click here to secure your club’s spot!
