NJYS Student Spotlight: Hannah Trainor and Alex Hoberman

When it was announced that the 2020 NJ Youth Soccer Annual General Meeting (AGM) would be held at Red Bull Arena, there were approximately two weeks remaining to prepare the event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual event had been postponed, and questions about hosting an in-person meeting lingered until mid-July. Ultimately, public health officials supported the event given the commitment to safety and social distancing. A great number of stakeholders deserve credit for this successful sprint. The professional staff at Red Bull Arena and the knowledgeable NJ Youth Soccer Board Members and staff worked tirelessly to execute this new concept and capped it off with the many event volunteers who helped ensure a quality experience for the membership attendees.

There were two additional key players who contributed significantly behind the scenes, those being NJYS summer intern Hannah Trainor and NJYS high school student volunteer Alex Hoberman.

Hannah Trainor is a former NJYS player and rising Sports Management senior at the University of Delaware. While interning with NJ Youth Soccer this summer, one major project she worked on was planning the AGM. Specifically, her tasks included the preparation of a concise timeline for the event. She was also responsible for creating slides that were displayed on the big screen at Red Bull Arena. Hannah worked behind the scenes with NJYS Executive Director Evan Dabby and NJYS staff members Ernie Cerone and Ryan Foley to help pull this event together, which also furthered her knowledge in event management.

“I am very proud of the team and their ability to pull this large event together so quickly under the circumstances,” said Hannah. “Gaining this experience in event management has opened new doors for me, and I have a newfound interest in event planning. I am very grateful for the whole experience at NJ Youth Soccer this past summer, and I appreciate the strong leadership and connections I have made.”

Alex Hoberman, a forward for STA Soccer Club and West Morris Central Varsity Soccer, had the unique opportunity to partner with NJ Youth Soccer on its 2020 Annual General Meeting. Facing unprecedented challenges due to COVID-19, he worked with the NJYS staff to adapt the event to the current climate. Alex assisted in developing content for the AGM, including the program booklet and script for the speakers and production crew. As a rising high school junior, he was able to see the inner workings of NJ Youth Soccer firsthand while this specific project sharpened his technical capabilities as well as his planning, organization and written communication skills.

“Evan’s leadership made me feel like a valued member of the team through his open and clear communication, constant check-ins and inclusivity,” said Alex when asked about his experience. “I also appreciated the amazing lengths that Ryan, Ernie and Hannah went to make this event a success and ensure that this experience was rewarding for me on a personal basis. I am so proud of the team’s resiliency, the way we came together during these challenging times and the tremendous effort that resulted in an amazing event.”

NJ Youth Soccer is currently offering a Sports Management Internship opportunity. With the unique circumstances around the fall semester, this internship will be completed remotely and feature flexible schedules for students. Sports Management majors are preferred, but all are welcome to apply.
