Grassroots Referee Course Information

NJ Youth Soccer is pleased to announce an all-female Grassroots Referee Course, courtesy of WAGS and its generous support in girls soccer. Upon successful completion of the course from interested applicants, WAGS will reimburse the Course Fees.

The NJ State Referee Committee is responsible for the certification and training of Grassroot Referees within New Jersey. Upon certification, a Grassroot Referee can accept assignments to officiate youth soccer matches from a certified assignor. This includes local travel soccer competitions (e.g., EDP, MCYSA, Metro, MNJYSA, MOSA) and tournaments, or local recreation leagues (e.g., SYSL, ICYSL, OCR, RVSL) and affiliated in-house programs.

First-time referees will undergo a hybrid of online learning and in-person education as a part of the certification process:

1. Complete Assignments in the US Soccer Digital Learning Center

  • Online Grassroots Referee Course  & Laws of the Game Training
  • US Soccer’s Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments
  • SafeSport Certification (18 Years or Older)
  • US Soccer Background Check (18 Years or Older)

2. Attend a Classroom Session (Approximately 7 hours)

3. Attend an Optional On-Field Session (Approximately 3 Hours)

Included with a first-time registration is the complete referee uniform kit from Official Sports and a referee badge. More information about this initiative will be posted as soon as possible, so please check back for details.
