Seminar
Descriptions

The annual NJYS Coaches Workshop and Vendor Expo will convene on January 5, 2008 at the spacious NJ Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, NJ. This continues to be the site of several highly successful gatherings attracting over 3000 people every year and hundreds of vendors!

This year's theme is "Excellence through Education" reflecting the importance of teaching all children regardless of their ability how to play the game before the development of winning teams so that they can derive the most positive experience. Our responsibility as parents, coaches, administrators and referees is to provide the most positive experiences for kids to reach their full soccer potential; how best to do that is where education comes into play. Once again we will feature the top youth, college and professional soccer minds from around the area sharing the latest thoughts and concepts in the game and administration.

Every 75 minutes starting at 9:45am, a series of 3 field clinics and 3 seminars will be featured from which to choose. Check the listing carefully as some of the subject matter will be presented more than once throughout the day as requested from those in attendance at last year’s show.

The Youth Soccer Club of the 21st Century Mike Poller

What exactly defines a “Club”? In some places around the world it is similar to the way a school or academy operates, where rather than being just a collection of teams, that all happen to be wearing the same jersey with the same patch, each with its own mission; the inner workings of an actual “Club” are much more intricate and tied together with one common mission. The “Club” of the 21st Century has become the focal point of youth player development around the world. Come and listen to a NJYS’ Club’s account of its trip to Nou Camp and the United European Football Association Champions of FC Barcelona of the Spanish La Liga. The presentation will address how players are identified and developed from youth to elite youth players; how soccer clubs and academies compare in America and other parts of the world; and how different player development philosophies affect the success of the club and the player.

Coaching Young Players Dr. John Thomas – US Youth Soccer

As an adult coaching young players, you hold a variety of important positions: role model, instructor, motivator, and disciplinarian. You will need to be sensitive to young people with different cultural backgrounds, as well as individual players and parents with different abilities, attitudes and interest levels. You may have a passion for soccer. But if you don’t connect with your young players in a way that really engenders a love of the game, motivates them to work harder, and reaches them on a personal level, you may not have the positive impact you could have on their lives. Come hear a few insights as to how you may want to communicate with players and parents.

Integrating the Inner City Athlete Charlie Inverso and Mike Van Wagner

It has been said that youth soccer throughout America is primarily popular in suburban areas. Many areas in our inner cities are teeming with children, who have natural athletic abilities and would greatly benefit from positive outlets, but often they experience negative influences. The game of soccer can be a positive life experience. Come and here about a program that is attempting to make a difference in the lives of inner city children from Trenton using the game of soccer. The Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Foundation’s mission is to provide positive life experiences for underprivileged and underserved children through education and athletic opportunities in the sport of soccer.

Excellence through Education Rick Meana – NJYS Director of Coaching

In this session we will have a panel of distinguished guests, former greats/legends who developed their skills and abilities in far different ways than the players of today. We will discuss the importance of striving for excellence as opposed to success and the importance of a proper training/learning environment that focuses on improving individual performance.

Dealing with Coaches & Other Bench Issues Mike Kodak – State Youth Referee Administrator, New Jersey
                                                                Barry Towbin–NJYS Director-Referee Education & Development

Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons Jason Sacks – Positive Coaching Alliance

This seminar introduces Positive Coaching Alliance's Double-Goal Coach model and provides and in-depth review of the three principles around which it is built: Honor the Game, Fill Emotional Tanks, and Redefine Winner. Supporting research is presented from experts in coaching, education and sports psychology. Every participant gains access to dozens of practical, proven tools to increase success during their next practice or competition.

Recreation Soccer Summit NJYS Recreation Team

Recreational level players are extremely important to the development and existence of any youth soccer program. It is important to provide programs that are catered to any level of player. Come and learn about the programs NJYS provides to the Recreational Player — programs that could benefit your organization, and how you can go about receiving assistance from NJYS in this area.

Developmental Readiness Dr. Steven Rice

As participation in youth sports continues to rise, more and more children are specializing in one sport at too early an age. This seminar will look at this phenomenon and the repercussions of bringing children along too quickly. The discussion will center on strategies for preparing children for what is ahead; learning the skills appropriate to age and ability; do not hurry to be over-competitive - burn-out waits; and, stay seasonal (rather than year round) – to avoid overuse.

Why Soccer Players Get Injured Dr. Ira A. Shapiro – Director of the Plaza Chiropractic Center in Old Bridge

Dr. Ira A Shapiro, a member of the United States Olympic team medical staff, will explore the how’s and why’s of soccer-related injuries. Through this session, participants will gain a much greater understanding of the differences between traumatic and overuse injuries as well as the reasons behind their occurrences. Also detailed will be methods for preventing injuries including the recognition of warning signs and symptoms and the steps needed to keep minor problems from becoming major injuries.

New Jersey and the National American Soccer League Jim Harrison and Miller Bugliari

Back by popular demand! This time around the NJYS historians will address how instrumental New Jersey soccer was in the development of the talent that played in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Over 50 players that played in America’s original professional soccer began their career as kids with a dream on the fields of New Jersey! Many of these legends from the Great Garden State went on to play in the NASL and represent the United States in international competition. Some of these players have achieved further recognition as an inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Bring your autograph books or what ever you want signed because there will be many surprises at this session!

Ask the Administrator Al Sinclair – President, NJYS

Got a question about insurance, rosters, player or coaching passes, travel, hosting a tournament? This session has been designed to answer your questions in these areas or others that you may have - an opportunity to get quick information!

Game Intelligence Dr. Robert Horn

Game intelligence refers to factors such as knowledge, spatial awareness, attention and anticipation. In this session we show how important these factors are to soccer performance and we provide coaching advice for developing game intelligence. Following the lunch break a field session on this topic will be held that will put into practice the theory discussed in this session.
