New Jersey Youth Soccer Recreation Club Referee Insurance Program |
|
Many recreation programs use youth referees for their in-house or recreation programs. These players, generally of high school age, are usually given some form of instruction and many times they are paid a nominal fee. To better meet the needs of our recreation clubs, New Jersey Youth Soccer has expanded its insurance programs to cover these youth referees in recreation programs. Youth referees in recreation clubs who meet the criteria below will be covered under both the NJYS Accident/Medical and General Liability insurance programs. There will no charge to the referee or the club for this coverage.
US Soccer has introduced the Grade 9 Referee Program specifically to address the needs of Recreation programs. NJYS urges all clubs to have their youth referees follow that program. In the near future, the NJYS insurance program will be phased out in favor of the Grade 9 Referee Program.
To be included in this program, a youth recreation club referee must meet the following criteria:
Age: 17 years and younger. If a club referee turns 17 years of age during the seasonal year, they will be covered until the end of the seasonal year.
Training: The club referee must have attended a training course. This may be a:
- Club Program any existing or new club program of their own design
- Club Run Program with NJYS material – information supplied to the club by NJ Referee Committee
Registration: The name and addresses of the club referees must be supplied to NJYS. The information required is first and last name, street address, town, state, and zip code.
Fees Paid: The referee can be paid (or not) in accordance with existing club policies. There is no charge to the club or the referee for this insurance coverage.
Exceptions:
- Adults are not covered under this program.
- USSF Registered referees are not covered under this program
- Travel League games are not covered under this program
Note: This program and any associated training does not give the referee a referee license or register them with the United States Soccer Federation Referee Program. As referees mature, NJYS recommends that these referees take the US Soccer entry-level school and become registered referees.
