Town Meetings

New Jersey Youth Soccer is sponsoring a series of town meetings between NJYS officials and representatives from our member clubs.  The meeting provides general descriptions of NJYS programs offered to affiliated clubs. Details

America’s Festival

The America’s Festival is a celebration of the recreation level player.  It represents an opportunity for these players and teams from various recreation programs to come together in a festival atmosphere for a day of fun and soccer.  The America's Festival is organized for players under the age of ten.

You can bring your team or bring a group of players from your club.  Are you scheduled to play a scheduled game in your recreation program on the day of one of the Festivals?  Well, bring both team, let us know and we'll schedule you to play each other.

The teams will play two small sided games on a small sided field in an non competitive environment. The object of the day is to have fun while enjoying a new level of play.   No prizes or trophies are given for winning.

The entry fee for the America's Festival is $20.00 per team.  Each team will receive a soccer ball and each player will receive an America's Festival tee shirt to recognize their participation in the Festival.  During the lunch break, NJYS will provide each players with lunch, a hot dog and drink.

During the day, there will be prize drawings for the players.

Other activities, such as clinics and games, are scheduled for the players.  During the day there will be mini clinics for coaches and parents and the opportunity to obtain more information on the game of soccer.

America's Festivals are run by NJYS and a host club.  If you would like to host an America's Festival, please give us a call.  The basic facility need is a minimum of 6 small sided fields and areas where we can set up our equipment.

Recreation Level Tournaments

These events are tournaments that invite recreation level players to participate.   While US Soccer has defined tournaments as either restricted or unrestricted, NJYS considers all recreation level tournaments to be restricted tournaments.  Recreation tournaments are generally for NJYS players, but players from adjoining states may  be invited. However, players/teams from outside of New Jersey must have permission from their State Association to play in a NJYS Sanctioned Recreation level tournament.  Since each of these tournaments has their own procedures for identifying recreation players, please contact the tournament host listed for each tournament for the documentation that you will  have to provide for your team.

Schedule of Recreation Level Tournaments

Recreation Level Referee Program

This is a program to develop the Recreational Youth Referees also known as a Grade 9 Referee.  This program has been designed to develop referees specifically for U14 and below recreation level programs and is geared toward supporting the younger referee.

This program will provide eight hours of instruction.  A portion of this instructional time has been set aside to allow each club to discuss the unique rules in its own competitions. Details of the program can be found here and the information to schedule a Recreation Level Referee Course is here.

Recreation Club Referee Insurance Program

The Recreation Club Referee Insurance Program extends the NJYS General Liability and Accident/Medical insurance programs to young referees that clubs use in their in-house programs.  The program covers youth under the age of 17 who are Grade 9 referees or have some club training and may be paid to referee recreation level games.  There is no cost to the referee or the club for this program. You can find the detail of the program here.

Y Clinic

The NJYS "Y" Clinic is a 2-1/2 hour clinic designed for the novice recreational level coach.  This clinic will provide easy to understand, hands-on, practical ideas and game-like activities that can be applied with lasting positive outcomes.  This clinic will be modified to address a specific age group, for example the U6-U8, U8-U10, or U12 coach.  All that is needed for this course is a minimum of 10 coaches, a meeting room, and a 50x50 yard playing area.  It is strongly recommended that actual players be present for the last hour and a half to allow for realistic demonstrations and observations of coaches.

At the conclusion of this clinic the participant/coach should be able:

  1. Describe the term 'developmentally appropriate' and how it relates to coaching the recreational level player.

  2. Design and apply practices and game-like activities that will provide many opportunities to stimulate children into moving, thinking, acting, deciding, and problem solving in an uninhibited and spontaneous learning environment.

  3. Apply a coaching/teaching philosophy of working with children that stresses enjoyment of learning through different stages of development.

  4. Discuss the balance between skill and challenge and how it relates to the joy of participation and satisfaction of learning to know oneself.

At the conclusion of this clinic, the participant will receive a "Certificate of Completion".  This course does not give the participant a coaching license.

Please call your Area Recreation Commissioner or the NJYS Office if you would to schedule a Y Clinic.   There is no cost of this clinic, but we ask that you provide a meeting room, and a 50x50 yard playing area.

Coaches Laws of the Game Clinic - This is a 6 hour course designed to increase a coach's knowledge on the Laws of the Game. This course will cover the more important parts of the Laws of the Game: What is needed to Play, Offside, Fouls and Misconduct, Free Kicks, Penalty Kicks, the Referee, and side line behavior.  At the conclusion, attendees will be tested and issued a certification of attendance. The cost is $100.00 with no limit to the number of attending. Most NJYS travel leagues will accept this course as meeting their requirement for coaches training in the laws of the game.  To schedule  one of these courses, please contact Mike Kodack, the State Youth Referee Administrator at: pmkodack@verizon.net

Parents - Understanding the Game - This program is especially designed for parents who know little or nothing about the Laws of the Game. This is a 2-hour session that will cover the parts of the Laws of the Game that are most misunderstood by parents. A better understanding of why the referee does or does not make the call will only help in the enjoyment of the game. In addition to the Laws of the Game there we will be a discussion on the issues of parental side line behavior and how it has a direct effect on the players, referee and the game.  The cost is $60.00 with no limit to the number of attendees.  To schedule  one of these courses, please contact Mike Kodack, the State Youth Referee Administrator at: pmkodack@verizon.net
