US Youth Soccer National ODP Championship
The US Youth Soccer National ODP Championships were held March 13-16 in Phoenix, AR. New Jersey Youth Soccer's entry in this championship was the 1994 Girls ODP team.
The road to Phoenix began in June 2009 at the US Youth Soccer Region I Tournament held in New Jersey. During the preliminary rounds, New Jersey defeated West Virginia, Connecticut, and Eastern New York to move on to the semi finals held in Kirkwood, DE two weeks later. During the Regional championship matches, New Jersey defeated Eastern Pennsylvania 5-1 in the semi final match and moved on to defeat Maryland 3-2 in the Regional Championship match. The Champion at the Regional competition moved on to the National competition to face regional champions from the other US Youth Soccer regions.
The semi final of the National competition featured New Jersey and Michigan in a balanced match which needed overtime to decide a winner. New Jersey got on the board in the 10th minute, but Michigan turned up the pressure in the second half, which paid off with an equalizer in the 60th. Just before the end of the first overtime period, New Jersey notched the winner to send them to the final match.
The championship match of the national competition featured arch rival, Cal-South against New Jersey. This was the third time NJYS and Cal-South had met in this event, with New Jersey prevailing in previous matches. California South took the early lead in the 13th minute, but New Jersey scored a 30 yard free kick coming out of halftime. The match was decided when New Jersey drew and converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute as New Jersey defeated Cal-South for the third time to give New Jersey the championship.
